Recycling takes a little effort on your part, but makes a big difference on the world.

As an emerging economy with a population of nearly two hundred million people, Nigeria generates quite a lot of waste. The Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON) estimates that nearly sixty-five million metric tonnes of waste is generated in the country per annum. This has often caused a waste management crisis, especially in rural communities. In a bid to effectively manage waste by recycling, the Sahara Foundation in partnership with Wecyclers launched it’s first recycling hub in ijora community.

The Recycling hub in Ijora community is actively in a recycling operation that targets a day-to-day recovery and sorting of a minimum of 200 metric tons of recyclable waste materials.

Meet Tina, the Hub admin as she talks about the benefits and impact of the recycling project in Ijora.

The Sahara Foundation in partnership with Wecyclers is supporting the community of IJora in Lagos to better manage waste as we collectively journey towards a zero waste society, globally, one community at a time.”

Everyone in the community can drop-off their PET bottles, cans, and cartons from different households, and communities, and be rewarded with either cash or access to health insurance based on their preference to support their social needs.

See users of the ijora Recycle Exchange hub receive the quarterly payouts for using the hub.

The Sahara Foundation aims to promote and create eco-conscious communities by engaging everyone in the society to create sustainable eco-solutions to problems impacted by climate change affecting people’s health in the environment.
