In the first half of the year, we expanded our recycling program by introducing two new GO- Recycling hubs in the Ikorodu Local Government Area, bringing the total number of hubs to eight. These new additions join our existing recycling hubs in six other Local Government Areas: Isolo, Igando-Ikotun, Lagos-Island, Onigbongbo, Ifako-Ijaiye and Apapa-Iganmu.
This impactful initiative is the result of a dynamic collaboration between the Sahara Group Foundation and its implementing partners; Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), Ibile Oil and Gas and WEcyclers, demonstrating the collective power of public-private partnerships in driving sustainable change and improving lives.
At our recycling hubs, we’ve made sustainability convenient and rewarding. Participants effortlessly recycle a wide range of materials, including PET plastics, pure water sachets, plastic furniture, paper, cardboard, cans, and glass bottles, in exchange for tangible benefits. Our hubs welcome an average of 50 visitors weekly, and we have successfully diverted over 258.4427 tonnes of waste from landfills, fostering a cleaner and greener environment.
This initiative has not only generated a significant environmental impact but also produced tangible social benefits. To date, we have created 24 direct job opportunities, empowering 771 households indirectly, and disbursed a total of N14,115,186, demonstrating our commitment to sustainable development goals 8 and 11.
With unwavering dedication, we strive to foster a culture of sustainability, empowering individuals and communities to embrace environmentally conscious practices. Our ultimate vision is a Nigeria where waste is transformed into a valuable resource, and every effort counts towards creating a healthier, cleaner, and more sustainable future for all. As we broaden our impact, we aim to inspire a paradigm shift, where every contribution, no matter how small, collectively paves the way towards a greener, more sustainable future
